AF55-200mm F/4-5.6 Di ll LD MACRO Budget Telezoom group Test - August 2007 Great Optics and value for money. We've had some surprises in our time, but none come bigger than the cheapest lens winning the test. Optically speaking, Tamron's 55-200mm Di ll offering is a belter and makes it out best buy. |

| AF55-200mm F/4-5.6 Di ll LD MACRO VERDICT: The 55-200mm f/4-5.6 Tamron is not a connoisseur's lens, but a highly efficient working tool. The difference between this and the most advanced zooms using different types of low dispersion glass and aspherics is not that great - except perhaps in aperture. A low level of colour fringing, some pastel colour infidelity and a little less crisp definition are the main sectors of difference from the aristocrats. Nowadays brief work with the computer can adjust most of these. At the same time its build quality feels, and its finish looks, as good as those of the most expensive optics. When testing a lens, I usually avoid checking the price until a general opinion about its performance has formed. In this instance I happened to find the US list price of 281.95 Dollars (about £155) before Intro 2020's SRP of £129.99. On turning to AP's back pages I suspected misprints, but they were not as I found UK retail outlets quoting £90-£100. The optical firms independent of the camera makers originally made their market progress by offering good, working alternatives at a modest price. This one is a real bargain.
